Having addressed the sock issue in a sporting goods store, we stumbled upon a massive street market running the length of several city blocks along the pedestrianised section of the famous street.
Run by the folks at www.marketplaceeurope.co.uk it had a rather curious feel to it with little of the usual emphasis on local traders (the press release says there’s lots of local stuff, but it largely eluded my notice) that this type of things usually showcases. Instead we had chillis from Wiltshire, traders from Wales and a real mish-mash of food options, most of which looked quite ropey. However, we came across a Greek food stall, which I’ll call Taste of Greece although it was unclear whether that was actually their trading name; those were simply the most prominent repeated words on their stall. It showcased some familiar things like pork and chicken gyros, and pastries filled with spinach and feta.
Both Tim and I ordered pork gyros (£4.50) with Tim’s without tzatziki as he’s committed eschewer of the cucumber. I added a swirly spinach and feta pie (£3).We lingered in a nearby covered spot as eating on the go would have resulted in much sogginess.
We were both very pleased with the gyros. It wasn’t quite as good as the one I’d had at Mr Nick’s but it was still rather tasty.
The spinach pie was flavour packed and the pastry was light and crisp. It made for good eating.
So overall, while some of the food options at the market didn’t look particularly inspiring, we made a good choice by lingering at the Greek stall. I had two good dishes both of which hit the spot very nicely. The market runs until the 27th so give it a look if you’re in these parts before then.

And Blythe got a pair of socks out of it too. Authentic, melt in the mouth exceptional socks.
I did indeed. I must find an occasion to utilise them, soon! 🙂
