With the low rumble of trains from Central Station all around, Lola & Livvy’s smart little shop on Argyle Street is full of character from the outset.

A split-level place with a jewel-lit tree branch suspended from the ceiling, I sat upstairs in their compact premises after ordering a full breakfast and espresso. The welcome was warm and attentive throughout.

The espresso arrived first and was fairly routine; nothing too offensive, but not great either.

The breakfast was considerably better but had one particularly weak element. I can think of few sadder things than peely-wally toast so was dismayed to see two traingles that had been momentarily introduced to the panini maker then added to the plate. Poor show.

Other items were quite daintily presented with a small portion of a good array of things. The bacon was thickly cut and packed with flavour and the mushrooms were nicely prepared.

So overall, I was charmed by Lola & Livvy’s but my appreciation of the place would be much greater if they sorted their toast. Dishes are inexpensively priced, though, and some of their lunch items sounded good, so I’d be happy to pop back for another visit.
