I’d been to The Square way back in the dim and distant past, but had been meaning to revisit, particularly to try their soup, for some time. After returning from an enjoyable trip to Ayr, I found myself in St Andrew Square and in need of lunch, so popped in.

A hugely popular place with the local office crowd, I was visiting towards 3pm, so found the selection somewhat depleted. From the usual daily selection of six different soups only two remained, so I opted for smoked turkey and pea over lentil and bacon. To that I added a chargrilled chicken and smoked cheddar ciabatta.

The friendly counter folks were helpful and obliging throughout, bringing broad smiles to proceedings after what must have been quite a frenetic lunchtime service.

With items in hand, I returned to my nearby office to munch them. The sandwich proved to be really rather good. The chicken was chunky and the smoked cheese was really nicely judged and well melted. I enjoyed the dish.

The soup was similarly good. With a rustic texture it packed a good amount of flavour and was a decently generous portion. Thumbs up.

So overall, I was glad to have revisited The Square. It does a very pleasing line in lunchtime fare. I’ll need to time it better, on my next visit, so I get a chance to choose from their full soup selection, but I enjoyed what I had today so will definitely be back again, in due course.
