Melinda’s

After a morning working in Leith my intention had been to visit the Lioness of Leith where I’d stopped in for a drink the other night and had liked the look of their food. However, after a monster breakfast at Rocksalt I was in the mood for something light around lunchtime so headed to Melinda’s, on Duke Street, instead.

The place is very pink both inside and out. It specialises in cakes of various shapes and sizes. They offer a small savoury menu featuring burgers, all day breakfasts, soups and paninis. I opted to try the latter two items.

After a short pause while things were prepared the two arrived together. The cheese and tomato panini came accompanied by a crisp salad. It was simple but rather good with a good amount of tangy cheese.

The soup was pretty good, too. It was a rustic vegetable mix with plenty of sweet fragrance coming through from carrots and parsnips.

So overall, Melinda’s did the job very nicely. This wasn’t ground-breaking stuff but everything was prepared with care and attention. Cakes are where their heart is, but they looked after an ardent savouryist will admirable consideration. I do wonder about their long-term sustainability in their current location, but I’d happily pop back next time I’m in the neighbourhood.
