Here’s a little review for the lunch we had at Auchingarrich Wildlife Centre, the other day. I’ve written more substantially about it over on Total Food Geeks, as it fit in with this month’s theme of Unexpected Finds, rather perfectly.
Auchingarrich is just a mile or two outside Comrie, set in the rolling hills of Perthshire. It’s picture postcard territory and a properly lovely place to drive for the day, or to call into on your way northwards. I’ve written previously of my general antipathy towards the countryside, so it’s not somewhere I would find myself every day, but it’s undeniably charming.
The café that tends to the needs of those taking part in a range of outdoorsy activities, such as bushcrafting or fishing, or those visiting to see the dazzling array of wildlife (the llamas and peacocks proved considerable hits with us). It has picnic style tables on an outdoor decking that allow you to bask in the wondrous scenery, as you dine.
From their selection of home-crafted delights from their open kitchen, I selected mushroom soup (from a selection of tomato; lentil and bacon; and mushroom), followed by a blue cheese and apple baguette, which was served with a nice salad. This was ordered from the counter, in simple cafeteria style.
My selections arrived almost before I’d had a chance to sit down, with both items presented quite neatly on one plate. It looked like a proper lunch, with an array of freshly tempting items.
The soup was beautifully creamy and packed with nutty mushroom goodness. The baguette was excellent with an excellent balance between the elements. The simple, crisp salad, a few crisps, some potato salad, a little coleslaw, and a slice of melon, rounded this out as an ideal lunch in preparation for an afternoon of archery, fire creation and nettle tea brewing.
So, the café at Auchingarrich was very good. For further details of the quite magnificent evening meal we had there, pop over the Total Food Geeks, for further details.
