Vakhtanguri

I was keen to try some Georgian food when I was in Almaty, so took a recommendation to check out Vakhtanguri which was a short walk from my home at the Rixos.

It’s a plenty large and impressive enough place with an outside terrace and extensive interior dining space. I was shown to a table inside which suited me very nicely.

The menu was entirely in Russian but I was assured that there were helpful pictures. This was true up to a point, but the structure of the menu didn’t lend itself to clarity on what were starters, mains etc or offer a clear path as to what you might eat. The waiters’ weak English didn’t help matters, but my lack of Russian by the same token wasn’t hugely helpful.

We muddled through to me ordering a traditional khachapuri (as sampled at Hungry Wolf) then a lamb kebab with a Greek side salad.

The food was accompanied by good Georgian wines but I have no clue as to what they were beyond one being white and the other red.

The salad arrived first and featured ripe tomatoes bursting with flavour. It was a really good dish.

My helpful waiter mixed the egg and butter atop the khachapuri with the melted cheese and then chopped it into eight parts for ease of dunking. The dough was light and fluffy and the gooey middle very satisfying.

The lamb kebab came served on a sword which again the waiter plated up for me. This robbed me of the opportunity both for a good photo and to slice off one of my fingers. The lamb was decent but a touch on the fatty side even for me.

So overall, Vakhtanguri gave me a good look at Gerogian cooking in stylish surroundings. They have entertainment from an array of local singers who ranged from merely bad to completely awful, so I might recommend sitting outside to avoid that particular ear assault. But do give the place a look next time you’re in Almaty.
