The Pod is a relative newcomer to the busy cafe district that is Bruntsfield. Just off the main drag, the premises were previously a baked potato shop but they’ve been reworked as a classic cafe with the popular bike aesthetic to the fore.
The owner is an Irish fella which meant a rare sighting of soda bread on an Edinburgh menu. My task was to work out what I would have with it.
This was quickly settled when I spied eggs however you wanted them on the menu. I wanted them poached.
In addition to two poached eggs on the soda bread toast, you got two sides from a diverse selection of whatnots included for the very reasonable overall price of £6.50. I opted for bacon and avocado.
Things were prepared to order with the friendly owner asking how I’d like my eggs poached. I specified runny and that’s exactly how they arrived on a neat and tidy plate.
The lightly toasted soda was a delight and the eggs were really good. The avocado was ripe, the bacon was crisp, and the living was easy. I enjoyed it all very much.
So overall, The Pod is starting from a very good standard. They’re still ironing out their coffee offering but have Union Hand Roasted as their roaster of choice which is fairly promising. I’d encourage you to visit, particularly if you have a longing for some soda bread in the Irish Mammy style.
