I’d heard about the arrival of Brochan, a gourmet porridge cafe in Marchmont, with equal parts intrigue and amusement. I gave it a visit on a recent Saturday.

Interior detail

The bright and airy space has seating for around a dozen in the compact space.

The menu is focussed around porridge and granola, with soup of the day from Union of Genius, and a selection of scones and cakes.

As I’ve said in the past, I’m not the world’s biggest porridge fan but I threw caution to the wind and ordered the creamy coconut porridge with matcha, pomegranate seeds, pumpkin seeds, toasted coconut and agave syrup.

The very friendly owner was soon delivering this assembled-to-order beauty in very stylish crockery. It was decidedly eye-catching.

With excellent flavour and texture variety, this was a really satisfying eat. I’m unlikely to ever become a true porridge lover but this was as good as I’ve had. It hit the spot very nicely.

So overall, Brochan is a great addition to our variety of cafe options. I found it very charming and was pleasantly surprised by how good their porridge was. I’d recommend a visit and will be back to try other flavour combos in the future.
