Street Box at Boxsmall
I’d visited Street Box, the Thai on Raeburn Place, as part of a grubcrawl, late last year. On that occasion we’d dined in at their one large table and it had felt a bit like we were missing the point of the street food feel that they’re aiming for. Consequently, I was glad to see them in residence at the Boxsmall market in full street trader glory.
Back for its second year atop Waverley Mall, the food stalls are rather more handily placed this time round, in full view of passing tourists on Princes Street. The list of traders, focussed on the best of local, is once more very impressive. Aside from Street Box, there’s Jones & Son, Shrimpwreck, Pizza Geeks, Orinoco and Daizy Delicious. The range on offer is a good deal better than at St Andrew and George Square.
Street Box keeps their offering pretty straightforward with dishes that cover the expected Thai bases. In that spirit I ordered their chicken pad Thai (£6).
They look to be cooking in batches for the chafing dish, rather than individually to order which makes sense given the likely brisk custom. This meant that my takeout box was with me almost immediately. I topped the bright noodles with crushed peanuts and lemon because I’m mega sophisticated like that.
It was the kind of dish that will serve people very nicely as they buzz around between Festival venues or tourist hotspots. It was hearty and filling with plentiful noodles, tender chicken and good crunch from carrots. I enjoyed it.
So overall, Street Box offers a really attractive option for a bite on the go. It holds its own alongside a very good bunch of Boxsmall traders. I look forward to trying other dishes from their menu over the course of August.
