BBC at the Edinburgh Festivals

For the second year running, the BBC at the Edinburgh Festivals tents have chosen a combination of Embo and the Italian on the Mound to cover their food and coffee requirements.

Given that the Italian on the Mound is home to one of the 10 Worst Coffees in Edinburgh this wasn’t a decision that found favour with me, but prior to an early morning show I needed a breakfast feed so stopped by the Embo stall.

This year the tent is in the grounds of my alma mater ‎George Heriot’s. It was a slightly odd feeling to arrive on a Monday morning at assembly o’clock but I soon acclimatised.

The Embo breakfast offering comprised breakfast rolls, a breakfast wrap and some sad looking muesli pots. I opted for the wrap (£5) which brought together bacon, sausage, tomato chutney, pesto and cheese. The contents were prepared to order then loaded into the wrap which was lightly toasted.

Having said hi to friends Charlie, Don and Di from Festivals down the years, ‎I found a sunny spot to munch.

As regular readers will know I’m not a sweet-tooth so this wrap didn’t work for me at all. There were pieces of sausage interspersed in the sickly chutney, but the bacon was buried in the mix and only added to the sweetness. It was basically breakfast dessert. It was filling but an otherwise disappointing start to the day.

So overall, the food offering from the BBC at the Edinburgh Festivals could use a major upgrade in future years. The wrap I sampled was a poorly balanced dish. If they renew these guys for future years at the Festival make sure to arrive fed and watered.
