I’ve had my eye on a visit to Platform 5 since it opened at the start of May. A Belhaven pub, it has taken over the previously vacant space at the front of the Tune Hotel in Haymarket.

Given its proximity to Haymarket’s revamped interchange station, their offering is tailored to suit. It opens at 7am and offers takeaway bacon rolls and hot drinks for busy commuters, which is what I was after this morning.

The place is quite smart with a nice train route mural on one of the walls. Other aspects feel a little cookie-cutter, though. Their full menu looks very like other pubs in their chain.

Service was quick and smiley so I was soon on my way with roll and espresso in hand.

The roll was profusely packed with bacon, but the fat should have been crisped a little better as it was rather “pully”. The espresso wasn’t great but that was no surprise.

So overall, I’m sure Platform 5 will provide a usefully decent service to travellers and locals alike. It’s not the most imaginative place on earth, but there was evidence of a decent beer selection, so I’ll need to come in for a pint at some stage to give it another try.
