In between meetings, today, I popped along to Los Cardos, on Leith Walk. It’s roughly equidistant from our Leith and city centre offices, which proved rather handy.
The place has a lofty reputation for tasty food, in the “fresh Mex” style. It’s the home of the original Edinburgh haggis burrito, which was the dish I chose to try.
Although I imagine they do the bulk of their business as a takeout place, there is room for around a dozen people to sit-in. I chose to squeeze into a little corner of one of their busy tables to munch my selection.
Watching it being assembled, by the excellently efficient and friendly counter woman, who offered various filling options through the process, was a joy in itself. It looked like it would be a challenging eat, likely to result in much dripping upon my tie, but in a strangely adept feat of neat eating, I managed to avoid such sloppiness.
I enjoyed the burrito, muchly, with the Macsween’s haggis working very well as a meaty filling. I’m still of the opinion that burritos are too often a curate’s egg, with good parts and bad, across the journey you have to consume their entirety.
With this version, I got a lot of chilli heat initially, from the middle of their three main heat options (mild, hot, very hot), and then not much as things progressed. Equally I got a lot of meaty haggis in the middle, then cheese dominated the end.
If this is truly a “journey dish” I say make an advantage of it, somewhat akin to the savoury then sweet Cornish pasties that are an entire, multiple-course meal in themselves.
The bottom line is that I thought the Los Cardos burrito was mighty tasty. It didn’t rock my world to its very core, but I would happily return and I’d happily eat it again. I really enjoyed sitting in, too, as the simple seating area is lovely, with bright walls and elegant cornicing. I’d definitely recommend a visit. Their quality is good, and the welcome extremely friendly.
