What’s more, Portobello’s face was more than half frozen as overnight snow had turned the promenade and beach into a winter wonderland. It really did look very bonnie.
I thought poached eggs would be a good way to go, so ordered a pair on crunchy wholemeal toast. I sampled their espresso, but let’s gloss over that as it was poor. The place is really very lovely. Clearly a favourite with the mother and baby set, it has a wonderfully welcoming atmosphere and was shown to best advantage in today’s icy sunlight.
My eggs were soon with me. Looking way too regular and neat to have been poached the old fashioned way, I suspect some clever gizmo was at work. This left the eggs beautifully presented, but on the slowly oozing side of runny. The thick cut toast needed them to be just a little runnier. Still, they were good eating. So overall, the Beach House served me rather well. There’s room for improvement on the coffee, but I enjoyed my egg dish. I’d be happy to visit again, next time I’m in the neighbourhood. Hopefully my face will be in better working order, by that time.
