Despite the huge temptation to do so, I managed to resist wading in on the sad demise of the Greggs macaroni pie. To be clear, that once cherished bakery is now dead to me.

But there’s no need for baby to be thrown out with the bathwater, so the quest for the perfect pie continues and where better to pursue such things with renewed vigour than Dundee.

Clark’s Bakery has been trading for 60 years and more. They offer an impressive array of different pies, including an intriguing looking spaghetti bolognese filled variety, but my heart was set on macaroni. I opted for a heated one.

The friendly counter woman soon had the item wrapped and with me. I ate as I toddled down the road to the train station.

It proved very good eating with good crisp pastry, some lovely crunchy burnt cheese bits, and while it wasn’t as saucy as some versions it was still deeply satisfying.

So overall, it was great to be reunited with a favourite item and a joy to try Clark’s for the first time. I’ll definitely be back and would be happy to point you in its direction.
