Having started life as an August pop-up themselves, in the venue where Machina Espresso have in turn popped-up this year on Victoria Street, they’re old hands at the game.
As well as extending their coffee opening hours, and doing late night coffee on Fridays and Saturdays, they were joined by doughnut purveyor We Are Jane Dough last weekend and small batch cocktail slingers Milk Money.
With very smart mini milk bottle and straw presentation, Milk Money showcase a menu of pre-made offerings ranging from cocktail classics to more bespoke drinks. I opted for the latter choosing one called the New Yorker which featured bourbon and pomegranate as its main component parts.
This was a very tasty combination. It was potentially just half a notch too sweet for my palette, but I enjoyed it very much indeed.
Speaking of too sweet, when talk of filling one of We Are Jane Dough’s vanilla-glazed doughnuts with maple-glazed bacon arose, I could not resist giving it a go.
There’s something about salty sweetness that’s so massively appealing; think salted caramel. Basically for every impulse of bacon doughnuts seeming like a bad idea, there was an equal an opposite wave of tastiness. It was an experience that will live long in the taste memory.
So overall, I think Filament has made some very good choices in its August friends. I look forward to visiting throughout the month to sample more cocktail combinations and dirty sounding doughnuts. I suggest you do, too.
