Three Coins

Half the battle of writing reviews is striking the balance between checking-in your expectations at the door while still applying what you’ve learned from everything that has come before. Getting the balance wrong can go one of two ways with the vastly preferable one being when you stumble upon a place that you had pegged as routine and it turns out to be remarkable. This was the case with a recent visit to Three Coins.

A rather ordinary looking little takeout shop on the main drag at Tollcross, in between Cafe Class and No 1 Sushi, I’d visited many years ago for a kebab but not previously tried their pizza. I was in the mood to rectify that.

I kept things simple with my regular topping of choice, pepperoni and mushroom. The friendly counter man was promptly about preparing things, then had time to chat and recommend another of their toppings for me to try if I enjoyed this one. When the pizza was ready, there was a twist from the pepper grinder added which was nice attention to detail for a takeout place.

I was indeed very impressed with the pizza. The base was thin, crisp and light and the topping extremely good quality. It was right up there with Moratti as the best takeout pizza I’ve had in the city.

So overall, Three Coins was an extremely pleasant surprise. Their pizza was top notch and the counter folks very welcoming. I’ll definitely back to try further topping combinations. It’s one to add to your list for a visit.
