Where Finnegan’s once traded, on Queensferry Street, Bread Meets Butter has recently taken over. I popped in for a breakfast visit to give its wares a whirl.

The interior is a significant upgrade on the previous incarnation, with a fresh and welcoming feel coupled with new display boards and signage. It’s a really nice little cafe spot.

It serves breakfast from 7am, with a range of tempting choices. I stuck with one of my current favourites and ordered up scrambled eggs on granary toast. I added an espresso, which was fairly ordinary stuff.

The eggs soon arrived looking neat enough. They were rather under-seasoned, but that was straightforwardly rectified. They did the job without causing any unexpected heather conflagrations.

So overall, Bread Meets Butter is an upgrade on the previous place, but needs a little work to make the food as smart as the decor. I dare say I’ll pop in to give their bacon roll a try at some stage, over the coming months.
