With a couple of events under my belt at the Dundee Literary Festival, I took the opportunity to wander on for some leisurely lunch at a nearby spot. I came across Avery & Co and thought it looked likely to fit the bill, so crossed the threshold.

A smart, family friendly interior bore all the hallmarks of somewhere quite recently opened and a logo proclaiming “Est 2014” confirmed that.

I was invited to take a seat, with the menu being delivered directly. I was informed that the soup of the day was pea, chilli and lemon, so my starter option was immediately sorted. I followed with a beetroot and feta salad.

The soup was delivered at the speed of light by the ever friendly and attentive waiting staff. It proved to be very good, with a lovely consistency and bags of sweetness from the peas nicely offset by the chilli. The lemon was somewhat lost, but this was still a very promising opener.

The salad maintained the high standard. Packed with healthy whatnots such as pumpkin seeds, puy lentils and squash, the beetroot and feta were the stars. The dressing had good vibrancy to it, making for satisfying eating.

I rounded things out with a pot of tea and a good long stretch of seated relaxation, which was precisely what was needed.

So overall, Avery & Co is doing good work. I was served two impressively tasty courses, both of which packed considerable charm. I’d be happy to visit again and would recommend you look in when you’re next in Dundee.
