Soul Sushi’s Secret Sushi Garden

My inevitably redundant claim, when visiting Harajuku Kitchen, the other week, that I’d now eaten in all the Japanese places in town has been entirely blown out of the water, in double-quick time.

Not only has a new place from the folks behind Tang’s opened on Rose Street, but Miso & Sushi has re-opened in a new takeaway location. To further add to things, Soul Sushi, who have been regular attendees at Scran Salon, have popped up for the Festival in Roxburgh Court, just next to Angels with Bagpipes and Zizzi.

Their sushi delivery service has been up and running for a good few months now and they are supplying more and more cafes and delis with lunchtime sushi sets. This was my first time sampling their wares.

In their little secret sushi garden, they offer a nice range of items, from which I invited co-owner Budge to select a couple for my lunchtime entertainment.

He opted for two half portions of their inside out rolls, with beef tataki & watercress and butternut squash & chilli his choices for me.

Served with a little portion of edamame and the usual pickled ginger and wasabi, this was a very neat little plateful.

Both rolls proved to be of very good quality, with excellent meaty notes from the beef fillet and lovely light crunch and sweetness from the squash. It was all extremely pleasing.

So overall, I’d recommend a visit to Soul Sushi’s secret sushi garden. It’s calm little spot only seconds from the utter madness of the Royal Mile, so is a perfect little hideaway. They’re open there throughout the Festival and even if the weather is a bit ropey at times, they have a couple of tables under a canopy so can cope with the odd spot of rain.

A super find just off the High Street. Delicious food, great friendly service. An oasis in busy Edinburgh.
