January 22, 2013 Sandwich, soup, Southside, Take Away 1 Comment

My lunchtime walks, in search of new takeout lunch locations, are getting quite lengthy, these days, as I’ve visited a good percentage of the nearby places. Today, my stroll took me to Flip, on South Clerk Street, which is a little over 20 minutes from my office. It’s all useful training for my charity walk, later in the year, of course.

Exterior

Flip brands itself as providing “healthy fast food”, which is a smart idea, particularly at this time of year, when we are bombarded with messages about the need for a healthy diet and regular exercise, whether we like it or not. The place itself is very bright and colourful, reflecting an ethos that food should be fresh and fun.

From their wide selection of sandwiches, wraps, burritos and whatnots, I opted for a haggis wrap, matching this with a large portion of their soup of the day, which was lentil.

Soup

I toddled back down the road with considerable alacrity, as I was keen to get munching.

I first turned my attention to the soup, which had a vibrant orange hue, which I suspected was not entirely created by the lentils. Indeed, there was a strong red pepper influence, giving the soup a flavour I hadn’t quite expected. It was pleasant enough, and had a good rough texture, but wasn’t a winning favourite with me.

Wrap

The wrap proved entirely more satisfying. Again, it showcased some unusual flavour combinations, with the major competing flavours on show being an intense cucumber from the tzatziki and the spiced meatiness of the haggis. Lettuce, peppers and tomato added a little vegetable crunch, and the grated mozzarella added a little meltiness. It was unusual, but really rather tasty.

So overall, Flip was pretty good. Service was friendly and helpful, although it was quite pedestrian, which didn’t seem very well aligned with their “fast food” notion, but that was fair enough with me. Their flavour combinations were fresh, although I have a feeling they might be only intermittently successful. Certainly, the place is worth a visit, next time you’re looking for tasty lunchtime snacks in the Newington neighbourhood.
