Virginia’s on King
I had a pretty epic day of eating ahead so decided to fully commit by starting with breakfast at Virginia’s on King, which was very handily placed from my hotel.
With a very good commitment to local sourcing, my choice of shirt – displaying brand loyalty to my friend Lauren’s family farm – caused a little stir. It was fun to chat dairy farming for a moment or two which is exactly the limit of my knowledge.
I had no particular idea what to order so I handed things over to my server who recommended the shrimp n grits. Who was I to argue?
Good filter coffee was delivered in bottomless supply as I sat at their window seat during a quiet Monday morning service.
My dish soon arrived looking hearty and smelling fantastic. It was a very substantial eat for so early in the day but again I was not arguing.
I am fast becoming a shrimp n grits expert (I’m not but I am eating it most every day), and I was very much impressed with this version. It packed excellent smoked sausage alongside the fantastically fresh prawns. The grits were as good as I’ve been served.
So overall, Virginia’s was an excellent way to start the day. It set me up for a day of art, coffee, food and walking, all to excess. I’d be happy to return for more of their well-considered dishes and may well do so before my time here is over.
