It was a flying visit to the Garden State to say hi to my friends Robyn and Al who were home visiting Robyn’s family over the Thanksgiving period.
After a beautiful walk around the iconic Princeton University campus and a nose around a local bookshop, our attention turned to sustenance.
We stopped for a pre-lunch beer and tater tot snack at Triumph Brewing. This was an excellent taproom showcasing some really nicely crafted beers. Their tots were a good bar snack, too.
From there it was onwards to our chosen lunch venue, Mediterra. Showcasing dishes from around the Mediterranean region, the menu looked well suited to some shared starters so that’s where we began.
We opted for the Medjool dates wrapped in bacon, the tuna tartare and the wagyu meatballs. These were all very good with the yellowfin tuna brightly citrusy in the ceviche style, the dates suitably plump and the meatballs soft and flavour-packed.
For mains, Robyn opted for their market grain bowl with extra shrimp, while Al and I both chose the mushroom Bolognese.
These were promptly delivered with satisfying aromas. The pasta was conchiglie and was liberally draped in a richly nutty ragu. It was simple and highly enjoyable fare.
Robyn’s bowl brought together various elements including smoked aubergine, sweet potato, shiitake mushrooms and a poached egg as well as five juicy king prawns. It was a hit.
We rounded things out with a good cheeseboard and less good espresso. It was very much the lunchtime feed we needed with the outside temperatures a huge chunk colder than I’d grown used to on previous legs of my journey.
Overall, Mediterra did a very good job of serving us a relaxed and convivial lunch in smart surroundings. I really enjoyed my little jaunt to New Jersey ahead of a busy few days in the full-on assault on the senses that is Manhattan. Give Mediterra a visit when next you find yourself in this beautiful part of the world.
