Here’s Looking at You

It seemed likely that at least one of my days in Los Angeles would be a lazy/hungover day given my late night arrival and strong programme of imbibing. Monday seemed as good a day as any for this occurrence so I committed to only one booking for the day which was dinner at Here’s Looking at You, a smart modern American place in Koreatown.

I hadn’t quite expected their cocktail game to be quite as strong but was delighted to see various references to tiki and a really broad range of rums on offer.

Upon being warmly welcomed and shown to my seat at the bar I was left with various lists to consider. I quickly chose a Hindsight cocktail to aid my food considerations.

The food list was a dazzling array of small plates designed for sharing but working pretty well as a starter, pasta, main course type thing.

I took advice and was pointed in the direction of the chicken liver parfait and the beefsteak tomato salad. I added the amazingly named bloodcake which is a really splendid term for black pudding.

The pate was first with a deeply rich, smooth as silk topping to crisp toast with a smoked maple sauce and pickled peppers. It was both elegant and rustic with an excellent complexity to the mouthfeel of each bite.

The tomato (I said tomarrrrto, she said tomayyyyyto) salad to follow was another dish of deft flavour and texture balance. I enjoyed it muchly.

The black pudding, duck egg and pickle salad to follow was another dish that really hit the spot. While I sipped on a classic daiquiri, this packed all the savoury punch you would hope for. It was splendid.

So overall, HLAY was a really high quality and enjoyable dining experience. It had a very warm and welcoming vibe and seemed to be presenting really top quality products with a considered yet dynamic level of thought. It would grow to be a regular haunt if I spent more time in this part of the world.
