South of Johnston
I have been lucky enough as part of my day job to collaborate on some very interesting work with a colleague, Richard, in Melbourne. I’d not had a chance to come say hi to him on home turf previously so was delighted to do so as one of my early items of business in the city.
Richard had previously quested at Mother India and Mediterraneo during a trip to Glasgow. He suggested lunch at South of Johnston which is not far from Saturday’s lunch venue at Belles Hot Chicken.
South of Johnston offers a wide menu with all-day breakfast, brunch and lunch selections across a broad range of cooking styles. The emphasis is on fresh local produce so there was no shortage of tempting sounding dishes.
I quickly settled on the corn and zucchini fritters while Richard opted for the baked mushrooms.
Dishes arrived very promptly, delivered by one of the many friendly and attentive waiters.
My dish was a mutli-element feast with avocado, a poached egg, kasundi – a Bengali mustard sauce – bacon and four crisply coated fritter balls.
Each element was carefully crafted with the smashed avocado packed with citrus brightness, the egg smartly poached and the fritters flavourful and crisply satisfying.
Richard was warmly appreciative of his dish which again showcased deft balance of many elements, this time including pumpkin hummus, dukkah, cashew cheese and crisp kale in accompaniment to the mushrooms on toast. It was accomplished stuff.
We had coffees with our food and these were delivered to a very good standard.
So overall, South of Johnston served us a really impressive lunch. It gave us excellent fuel for a productive catch-up. I’d be happy to return and immerse myself further in their well-considered menu. Make sure to plan your visit soon.
