Nassim Hill Bakery & Bistro

An initial impression of Singapore – which I have no real idea whether it’s right or fair or whatever – is that it seems to focus on top-end with lots of glitzy places in hotels and couture malls, and then on the more humble fare of the food centres, from which I’d already sampled lightly, but doesn’t have such a strong or busy middle market.

I was looking for something in that middle bracket – a bistro, brasserie type place, regulation curry house or mid-range Japanese place near at hand – and it took quite a wee while to hit upon the Nassim Hill Bakery & Bistro. Maybe I was just being unnecessarily fussy.

I toddled along the road and was soon crossing the threshold of a smart place with the feel of a wine bar to it.

They offered various food options across small plates, sharers, pizza, pub grub and slightly more refined main courses. In my indecisive mood this felt absolutely ideal.

I decided to start with a couple of their snacks which proved to be rather substantial. The bacon and cheese croquettes were good little crisply coated bites. The panko coated portobello mushroom sticks were rather good, too. Both had very good accompanying dips, chipotle and dill respectively.

My main course was three decently large lamb chops atop mash with spinach and tomatoes. The tomatoes felt a bit superfluous, but the chops featured well-seasoned, tender meat and the mash was very satisfying with well-judged truffle notes. I enjoyed it.

I accompanied things with decent chardonnay and syrah which were a little reduced in cost as part of their 9am-9pm weekday happy hours.

So overall, the Nassim Hill Bakery & Bistro suited me very nicely for a hearty and relaxed feed. I enjoyed everything I ate and would happily return to try further dishes from their broad menu. Give it a look if this sounds appealing next time you’re in town.
