Greek Artisan Pastries

The joy of En Route, En Croute is that when I spot a place new to me I can just hop off the bus and investigate, confident in the knowledge that a fresh adventure awaits when I hop back on.

One such sighting led me to debus in search of Greek artisan pastries at a place called…Greek Artisan Pastries. Located on Portobello High Street it marked yet another visit to this part of town in recent times.

Their window display, which includes their full range of sweet and savoury delights, is highly eye-catching.

Ham, cheese and tomato one

The very friendly owner explained that they were a showcase of various regional Greek pastry specialities. He took me through them with mentions of a potato one and the look of a ham and cheese one sticking in the memory well enough for me to order them both.

I took them to go so went and ate them in an obliging nearby bus stop.

The potato and herb patatopita from the Kalamata region featured beautifully flaky pastry and a smooth potato filling that really hit the spot. It was very good indeed.

Potato one

The zabonotiropita to follow was an Athenian speciality featuring ham, Edam and an absolutely fantastic tomato sauce. It reminded me of a light pastry version of a calzone. It was memorably splendid.

So overall, I’d strongly recommend a visit to Greek Artisan Pastries. The quality of the pastries I sampled was really excellent. Make sure to visit soon as I’m sure you’ll be impressed with this panoply of pastry joy.
