Steampunk
My lack of ability to get on a train to North Berwick to check out some of their cafes, bars and restaurants had reached embarrassing levels. Accordingly, when driving home from a splendid few days in the countryside of County Durham I took the opportunity to steer things towards a stop-off there for coffee at Steampunk on Kirk Ports.
I was joined by Vicky and Matt, whom along with fellow revellers Fiona, Venetia and Adam had enjoyed an outstanding few days where we ate a lot of meat from G Bolam Foods, expertly roasted by Venetia, and drank a fair amount of weird and wonderful cocktails, amateurishly shaken and stirred by me.
We had some outstanding lorne sausage from BBL, great smoked back bacon from Bolam, excellent charcuterie from Rachel Hammond, and fabulous shortbread from Pinnies & Poppyseeds. And the roast potatoes were divine.
Anyhoo, Steampunk’s North Berwick HQ and roastery had long been on my list for a visit and we timed it beautifully to catch it at its most sunkissed and radiant.
We chose a table in their courtyard and then ventured into the stylish industrial interior to place our order. It was nice to see Lewis, the Bearded Barista, working behind the bar. I knew that likely guaranteed the coffee would be delivered to an excellent standard. And so it proved.
My espresso was a bright Guatemalan which had a wonderfully smooth finish. For the milky coffees, Vicky and Matt sampled a Nicaraguan Aurora which was warmly appreciated.
We opted to have some lunch, too. Vicky and I had soup, which today was lentil and harissa. It was completely splendid.
Matt and I tried their impressively good cheese toasties. They were a really enjoyable eat.
So overall, Steampunk delivered to an outstanding level on all aspects of their offering. It was an excellent stop on our journey home after a joyful holiday week. I’d recommend it to you next time you’re looking for excellent coffee and grub in top quality surroundings.
