The Greenhouse – SADLY NOW CLOSED

The Constitution Bar closed its doors for the final time a couple of months back after a good run serving punters on Constiution Street. Signs of a refit were almost immediate and before long signs went up proclaiming the new name as The Greenhouse.

From the team behind The Black Fox, The Greenhouse promised a vegetarian focussed menu. This sounded intriguing so I enlisted the company of regular guest quester Amy to go and investigate.

The space remains slightly labyrinthine with a main dining space and bar augmented with a front dining area, outdoor seating, and a couple of free to hire function rooms.

The refurbishment is very smart with greater emphasis on booth seating. But it’s a big space and can feel a little echoey and empty even when liberally populated.

Amy eventually found me after initially thinking I’d have opted for a sunnier table. I was needing shade as my hangover was fairly substantial.

Halloumi fries

The lovely waitress soon brought us menus and water. We both opted for a main and a small plate as a side. Amy chose their veggie tacos while I opted for the halloumi burger. Amy joined me in halloumiing with a portion of their halloumi fries while I tried their house hummus.

The menu emphasises veggie and vegan options with seitan and jackfruit prominent, but there’s the likes of chicken wings and pulled pork – no red meat, for now – so no need to swerve if you have an aversion to the veggie approach.

Things arrived all together, as requested, and looked pretty good. Amy thought her tacos were a little on the saucy side, but I thought they had a good smokiness. They were too messy to eat by any other method than knife and fork, though.

We agreed that the halloumi was very good. The portion of halloumi fries – six chunky slabs – was probably over the top, but Amy met the challenge with her usual vigour.

My burger was very good with the bun of good quality and the accompanying fries and salad very enjoyable.

I think the star of the show was the hummus. Topped with toasted nuts and served with crisped pitta, it was full of aromatic joy. It was as good a version of this Levantine classic as I’ve been served in quite a while.

So overall, The Greenhouse looks to be doing very good work. We didn’t explore the drinks options but the food was all delivered to a really pleasing standard. Give it a visit when you’re looking for a fresher approach to pub grub, well suited to sunny days and relaxed dining.
