Pop-up Geeks – Wubba Lubba Dub Dub

The Pop-Up Geeks – Rachael and Linden – have been taking the Edinburgh drinks scene by storm in recent times. Their Game of Thrones themed takeover of the Daylight Robbery basement bar was queued out of the door.

The success of this and other events has allowed them to secure their first permanent premises in the Arches at Waverley in between Baba Budan and the Chophouse.

Their first offering was Perilous Potions which drew on the magical world of the likes of Harry Potter. Again, this packed punters in to the rafters.

Their new offering, Wubba Lubba Dub Dub, draws on the weird and wacky world of Ricky & Morty.

I was totally unfamiliar with this show so used up some valuable retirement time binge watching the series. It’s a fun show. But you can quite happily enjoy the innovative drinks without it causing great pain or requiring help from others.

They have brewed a custom “high concept sci-fi sour” beer with local favourites Campervan. This is deliciously drinkable on its own but you get the opportunity to experiment with various syrups to concoct your own special variant. I really enjoyed the sour cherry, in particular.

Their cocktails have some nice twists going on. I really enjoyed the nine season arc which featured the szechuan peppercorn sauce that Rick is searching for holy grail style in the show.

We also very much enjoyed the minty twist on a Manhattan. It was schwifty without ever getting too squanchy.

So overall, I enjoyed both visiting Wubba Lubba Dub Dub and learning about the world of Rick & Morty. Next up for the Pop-up Geeks, in a couple of months time, comes a bar inspired by the works of Tolkein. Fortunately, I’ve read some of his books and seen some of the films so I don’t have as much homework for that one. Go visit this excellent bar and sample some highly inventive drinks next time you get the chance.
