After being all pious about giving places a chance to bed-in in my review of Toast, I knew I’d end up in a bunch of new places in the following weeks and so it seems to be proving.
The latest was Mugs Cafe which has taken over from Organic Delicious at the foot of Morningside Road.
Organic Delicious was doing some interesting things. They had their own organic coffee blend and carried this organic drive throughout their menu. Unfortunately, their coffee was some of the worst I’ve ever tasted and their food was not much better. It came as little surprise to see the business change hands.
Mugs has kept the space broadly the same with the quite narrow interior populated by Ikea tables and chairs painted pink and purple and some comfy sofas draped in the same colour scheme.
I was in light snack mood so ordered a slice of their bacon and comte cheese quiche which was served with a simple salad. I tried their espresso. It was better than Organic’s but Brodie’s is not a favourite of mine.
The quiche was pretty good with light puff pastry and a well seasoned filling. It did the job with little fuss.
So overall, Mugs Cafe is a definite upgrade on what has gone before in the space. It felt friendly and assured. It has some room to grow and improve, but it’s early days so once they’re better settled-in I can see them building an appreciative audience for their home-baked fare. Give it a look if you’re passing.
