Maki & Ramen

It had long been in my mind to give the Maki & Ramen Omakase restaurant on Fountainbridge a visit, but I’m not in these parts quite as often as I once was. When a meeting at Akva took me there on a Monday evening, I enlisted the help of regular guest questers Hayley, Ingrida and Jessica to give it a look.

Eel nigiri

I wasn’t super clear in my invitation leading to a table for four being booked at their West Richmond Street premises, which was a slightly embarrassing mix-up that the staff were very gracious about.

We were shown to a table where Hayley and Jessica were invited to take off their shoes in traditional Japanese style. I managed to blithely pretend I hadn’t heard which saved the room from the joy of my 16,000-steps-that-day feet. Arriving a little later, Ingrida couldn’t be parted from her excellent Snoopy Vans.

After a brief look at the menu we quickly settled upon ramen main courses with a selection of whatnots as shared starters.

The whatnots were made up of very good tuna sashimi, delightful miso aubergine, good gyoza and smart looking smoked eel nigiri. These were all promising openers.

The ramen also hit the mark very nicely. My tonkostu was deeply flavourful and packed with porky goodness. Hayley and Ingrida opted for the dan dan mein. It met with their approval. Jessica’s beef tataki ramen was quite vigorously spiced but was similarly appreciated.

We rounded things out with slightly too frozen green tea ice cream and rather more pleasing deep fried mochi.

So overall, we had a highly enjoyable time at Maki & Ramen. Much like their sister restaurants Maki Maki and Maki & Ramen, they serve very good quality fare. This place is rather bigger than the other two and the expansive space offers a grander experience. I’d recommend it to you.
