The day after my brother’s wedding was always going to be one for gentle reflection. After a rather too early train journey to Glasgow, I was in need of breakfast that would hopefully restore me to a reasonable level of vitality.
Health-conscious Kcal Kitchen on West Regent Street seemed like a decent choice.
The below-street-level premises are smartly appointed with light wood to the fore. I liked the set-up very much.
The friendly counter woman soon brought a menu. I quickly settled upon the smashed avocado on toast to which I added a pair of poached eggs and a slice of black pudding.
Their coffee is by local Glasgow roastery Papercup. I had my usual espresso. It was made to a very good standard.
The breakfast dish was soon with me looking much as expected. The eggs had suitably oozy yolks which was good to see. Seasoning was slightly timid but I suspect given their healthy principles they are looking to minimise salt input in the dishes, which is fair enough. The toast could have used a little butter, but again I understand why it wasn’t there. I enjoyed the dish very much, these minor quibbles aside.
So overall, Kcal Kitchen looks to be doing good work. It offers healthy ready meals for people to take away and heat at home, as well as their extensive menu of options to eat in the cafe. It’s a well-judged and carefully thought out business that has plenty of joy at the heart of its very good, healthy food. I look forward to many future visits.
