It was good news to see the second branch of Castello Coffee open a couple of months ago. I’ve been a devoted fan of their Castle Street branch since it opened back in 2012. On a sunbathed Saturday I popped in to take a look.
I’d visited for coffee just after they opened and been hugely impressed with the refit of these premises on Barclay Terrace that traded as Black Medicine for many years. It’s a great nook and cranny set-up across split levels.
I sat down at one of their window shelf seats after ordering espresso and poached eggs with spicy beans on toast.
The coffee arrived first as was to their usual excellent standard. As with the mothership branch they use Allpress beans to excellent advantage.
The eggs soon arrived looking simple and very neat. The yolks of the eggs were runny and golden while the beans had excellent piquancy and warming spice. It was a lovely dish.
As with many places they’re still on the hunt for chefs to offer an expanded breakfast and lunch selection, particularly at weekends, but what they have for now is extremely pleasing.
So overall, it came as little surprise to find Castello Bruntsfield on such good form. Sandro and the team know what they’re doing and they have delivered a fully operational second branch with calm assurance. Make sure to visit soon.
