Spilt Milk Social Club

I’d visited the Spilt Milk Social Club on Great Junction Street a wee while back and been quite impressed. However, their choice of coffee seemed to be at odds with the overall feel of the place.

Now that I’m spending rather more time in the neighbourhood, I’m on the hunt for the same diverse portfolio of good coffee places as I enjoyed latterly in my time in the West End.

To that end I was pleased to note from their A-board outside the place that they were now serving Williams & Johnson rather than the third-rate Myrtle I’d sampled on my last visit.

Williams & Johnson were previously roasting in the Biscuit Factory but have now consolidated their operation into their Custom Lane cafe premises. It’s good to see a growing number of Leith businesses – Quay Commons, Mo Beans, and now here at Spilt Milk – using their beans.

As is my usual practice I ordered an espresso (£1.80) which the friendly counter man was soon preparing.

It was made to a very good standard and was just so much better than the coffee I’d had on my previous visit.

So overall, it was good to discover that Spilt Milk Social Club has now addressed its main weakness. Their offering is now really impressive and it’s a place I like a lot. I’ll be back for many future visits.
