Buffalo House at the Last Word Saloon – BUFFALO HOUSE NOW CLOSED

When the boys from Bramble, Lucky Liquor and Last Word Saloon took over the premises previously occupied by Brew Lab West End, last year, they had the opportunity to centralise some of the processes for running their bars. Along with this providing a place for the bottling of their range of spirits and liquers – Seawolf, Cross Brew, Braemble and the Lucky Liquor Liquers – it meant they could remove all the gizmos from the kitchen in the Last Word freeing up the space for a full food service for the first time since the days of The Saint.

The first team to take on the kitchen are our friends from Fresh Revolution, the outstandingly street food traders with a firm commitment to locally sourced, lovingly prepared food.

They had a little launch event with the press and blogger community a couple of weeks ago, so you’ve probably seen some coverage on Instagram and the other interwebs. I popped down to check things out on a sleepy Wednesday evening.

Beans and fries

The heart of their offering is barbecued buffalo brisket sourced from the Buffalo Farm in Fife. There’s a smart tie-in with bourbon brand Buffalo Trace in the barbecue sauce and the “boilermaker pie” for dessert. They also use the house beer, Smoke in Your Rye, brewed by Alechemy, in their smoky BBQ beans. There is a pulled jackfruit option for vegetarians.

I opted for the brisket bun (£8), the gravy fries (£4) and the beans (£3). I took up station at the bar, with manager Grant and new recruit Michael looking after me in fine style. I particularly enjoyed the Martinez made on Portobello Road gin that I sampled.

Cocktails

Chef Ronan delivered the food and left me to the unenviable task of taking half decent photos in the atmospheric lighting. I failed, as you can see.

The food was just as excellent as expected. I’d been warned that the gravy fries were dangerously good. The beans were exceptional, too. And the brisket packed excellent meatiness with the BBQ sauce warmly spicy.

So overall, Buffalo House at the Last Word Saloon is well worthy of your attention. It may take a little time for it to build an audience because people are used to Last Word being a pre- and post-dinner drinks place, in the main. But being able to tuck into delicious smoky treats in the cosy surroundings of this prestige cocktail bar seems an excellent fit for chilly winter evenings. Make sure to visit soon.
