Shrimpwreck at Bourbon

I’ve been a big fan of Shrimpwreck’s work since visiting them at the Platform 2 market at Waverley on their second day of trading. Since then they’ve established themselves as one of the premier street food traders in the country and completed a stint at Buchanan Galleries to boot.

Signage

Their latest venture is a residency at Bourbon, the nightclub on Frederick Street. The kitchen there was previously home to the excellent Ninja Buns so it’s a place that’s used to very high quality fare.

I popped in to take a look at what was what on the day before their operation really caught fire with a 50% off day to launch their extensive new menu.

Soup

Their list of options was a good blend of new dishes and familiar favourites. Having sampled much of their core offering, I stuck to the newer dishes settling upon a small portion of their seafood chowder, a portion of their veggie nuggets, then on the recommendation of the friendly barman/waiter a portion of their Buffalo prawns.

Dishes arrived altogether looking pretty smart. I started with the soup which I was obviously delighted to see on the menu. I hear that the big portion comes in a bread bowl. This will be just the thing to elevate this really enjoyable soup into the stratospheric realms of Soupquest’s exceptionals. I look forward to returning to preside over that matter.

Nugs

I liked the veggie nuggets. These were crisp little balls of squash and broccoli goodness served with a really satisfying spiced mayo.

But the stars of the show were the prawns. An extremely generous portion of deliciously juicy prawns were coated in lightly crisp batter. They made for excellent eating.

Shrimp

So overall, Shrimpwreck look to have made the transition to permanent Edinburgh premises with all the confidence and style that they’ve shown in their previous endeavours. I’d strongly recommend you visit and I look forward to further exploration of their menu in due course.
