I’m a regular espresso customer at Baba Budan and I’ve long been meaning to visit on a day – now any day between Wednesday and Sunday – when they serve their full food menu. Finally I got my shit together and brought a healthy appetite, too.
One of the key players in the Arches development on East Market Street, they’ve expanded to a two-arch operation with a coffee shop in one and kitchen in the other. From an original focus almost exclusively on doughnuts, they’ve gradually built their offering to where it is now.
I’ve previously sampled their breakfast bacon and avocado roll but it was on a day when my tastebuds were not at their peak due to hangover constraints.
Today I was in the mood for something from their lunch selection quickly settling upon the sweetcorn fritters. I added a pair of poached eggs on top for an extra quid.
But first there was espresso with an excellent natural Brazilian from Dark Arts. This newish – roasting since 2014 – London roastery has some very cool design work and packaging. The espresso was outstanding.
The food soon arrived looking very smart. It proved to be one of the best dishes I’ve had this year, so far. The eggs were spot on and the fritters were absolutely delicious. The accompanying tomato salsa was beautifully judged.
So overall, it was excellent to find Baba Budan on such fine form. The place has developed into one of the best cafes in the city and a confirmed favourite with me. I would strongly recommend a visit and look forward to seeing you there.
