I seem to have been spending a disproportionately large amount of my lunching time in the Tollcross and Bruntsfield area of late. Again I found myself in that part of town so headed for Thistles a new cafe on Home Street.
The interior is pretty simply appointed. There are high tables for lingerers like me but the majority of the trade is done by takeaway.
Each day they offer two soups and four hot dishes, all prepared on the premises. The hot dishes today included beef hot pot, lasagne, and garlic chicken with jalapeno sauce. I was intrigued by the last one so opted for that.
But first I gave their soup a go, opting for chicken noodle. Just as at Proven Dough I was presented with a takeaway soup cup served on a slate. Shudder.
The soup was very good, though, with a light and aromatic broth and good chicken pieces. I liked it a lot.
The main course of grilled chicken strips served with rice was pretty simple but elevated by a really good chilli sauce. It packed a good heat and a citrus brightness to it. It was accomplished cooking.
So overall, I really liked Thistles. It’s cheap as chips and serves hearty fare that’ll address hunger and put a smile on your face. It’s friendly, assured and has a really good feel about it. Give it a go next time you’re in this part of town.
