I was sad to see the Tartan Stag on East Preston Street close but it didn’t come as a massive surprise. Since trading for many years as Chatterbox this location has cycled through businesses with Cafe Valencia and Forn – which was outstandingly good) also having come and gone in our brief time closely monitoring things.
Strigicake (Very Italian Taste) is the latest business to give the space a try. It focusses on all day breakfasts, burgers and cakes. So, pretty much exactly what Tartan Stag was doing.
There’s a difference in emphasis with some of their fruit tarts very eye-catching, but the main difference is in the decor. It is strong on parma-violet purple and owl detailing including some hauntingly creepy light fittings. It’s…pretty odd.
I was in need of a substantial feed so opted for the full breakfast. It comprised two rashers of bacon, a sausage, haggis, egg, two hash browns, tomato, mushrooms, tattie scone, beans and toast. A decidedly average espresso was included in the price.
The dish was fine. The haggis and egg were the highlights; the sausage was notably poor. The rest was just OK.
So overall, Strigicake is on a sure road to failure based on the luck of the rather better businesses that have traded on this site in the past. Their chance lies in connecting their smarter looking cakes with a sweet-toothed audience or tapping into the hitherto unexplored market of purple-loving owl fanciers. But I’d be surprised to see it still trading in a year’s time.
