The Rosehip

We’ll never quite reach complete coverage of all the eateries in Edinburgh, but it’s starting to feel like we’ve visited everywhere we’ve had on our list. That presents a very welcome opportunity to revisit places to see how they’ve developed since last we dined there.

Exterior

We originally visited The Rosehip for a good value lunch not long after it took over the premises once graced by Seadogs, on Rose Street. Over the years we’d noticed the menu shift and progress through various iterations and had heard generally positive reports.

The space remains largely the same with a split-level dining area. I opted for the back section on this visit. It looks out over Rose Street Lane which isn’t the most picturesque but it does offer good light.

Scallops

Their menu is a diverse mix of pub grub classics and locally driven dishes. I tried to encompass both by ordering the scallops to start then following with their pie of the day which was beef and chicken.

The starter arrived promptly and looked good, although the accompanying pea puree looked sparse and pale. The three scallops, served coral on, were nicely cooked. Two chunky pieces of black pudding were very tasty but slightly over-powering. It was a dish of good elements but it didn’t quite come together as it might have.

Pie

Aside from the token gesture amount of pastry which was hard rather than crisp, the pie was really good. The filling packed a blend of beef and chicken pieces in a deeply flavourful gravy. The accompanying chunky chips and veg were very good, too. I liked it.

So overall, I rather enjoyed The Rosehip. It’s trying to cover a little too much ground with its menu but in a city that’s surprisingly weak for good pub grub options I can see myself sending people here and not putting too many constraints on what they should ideally order. The waitresses were warm and welcoming and the place is well appointed so I’d be happy to point you in its direction when you’re next after hearty fare.
