There can be only one….

Thailander has to be the eatery with the best name in the city. Or does Wok Ness hold that honour? Whatever the case I’ve been meaning to visit the Tollcross Thai takeaway for ages on the strength of its splendid name and on a blustery evening I did just that.

Fermented sausage

While takeaway and delivery are at the core of its business, the place has a couple of tables for punters to sit-in so I did just that.

The menu is pretty simple and straightforward. I wasn’t firing on all cylinders so gawped at it for a bit but soon enough settled upon the sai krok esan to start followed by a simple chicken pad Thai.

Pad Thai

Dishes were cooked to order by the friendly kitchen staff and were with me in very quick time, both arriving together.

Sai krok esan is, of course, a traditional fermented pork and garlic sausage. It was served in thick slices with a lovely little salad of lightly pickled ginger. It was slightly odd with the sausage meat quite dense but it had good flavour.

The main course was one of the better pad Thais I’ve been served in the city. It had a really good citrusy spice to it and the marinated chicken pieces were soft and delicious. I was very impressed.

So overall, I was really pleased to find Thailander on such fine form. The pricetag is notably inexpensive and the quality was very good. I’d be very happy to visit again or order takeout for delivery, and I’d recommend that you do likewise.
