Ronaq

I’d visited the Craigleith branch of popular local Indian restaurant Ronaq in late 2016 in preparation for the imminent arrival of their second branch on East Market Street. It took until early February for the new place to open its doors so after giving it a little time to bed in I thought I should go and check it out.

Interior

As with their original site, the interior is very smart with this branch boasting an impressive view over Waverley to the city centre. It should ensure plenty of tourist trade during lighter summer evenings.

The welcome was very warm as despite only having visited once at their other branch I was recognised and greeted like a regular. There was a fairly steady stream of punters for whom this was the case, which was good to see.

Prawn puri

The menu is exactly the same as at the other branch. I’d made a couple of not such great choices last time so opted for a different approach. I started with the prawn puri then followed with the haddock balti. I added saag paneer on the side and a plain naan.

Before that I gave their poppadoms and pickle tray which I feel duty bound to do after the diabolical Morningside Spice. It contained really good lime pickle and good spiced onions so did its job in contributing to blanking the Morningside horror show from my mind.

Haddock balti

The starter then followed looking much as expected. It was a solidly decent version of a dish that I order pretty regularly. It didn’t hit the heights of the impressive one I had from Shapla recently, though.

The main course haddock balti was really good with lightly treated fish in a warmly spiced sauce. The saag paneer hit the spot and the naan was of good quality.

So overall, Ronaq is hitting the same pleasing standards of its original branch. It still lacks a really killer dish, though, so is in the realms of reliable rather than life-changing. Give it a go and see what you make of it, perhaps next time you have visitors to the city looking for somewhere new to dine with a view.
