To round out my jaunt to the granite city, I took a recommendation from my cabbie and toddled to Rustico on Union Row.
A down-at-heel Sicilian-style Italian, it’s a signature property packed with charm. The extensive front of house team are full of warmth and keep service ticking along accurately and at a good pace.
The lunchtime menu looked to offer some really excellent value, but given the a la carte was available and I had a little gap before my next available train, I opted for dishes from there. I also drew upon their regularly changing specials board.
Sadly, they’d run out of enough aubergine for the melanzane parmigiana which was my preferred starter option, but the waiter recommended the panzerotto as a suitable replacement. This brought together aubergine puree, goat’s cheese and mint in two crisply crumbed tubes. It was a deliciously light and fresh opener.
The main was a much richer dish of chicken and broccoli rigatoni in a creamy blue cheese sauce. It was simple stuff be very well executed. I liked it a lot.
So overall, credit goes to my taxi driver for her excellent recommendation of Rustico. It served me two very pleasing dishes that provided a very satisfying lunchtime treat. Give it a go next time you’re looking for characterful Italian fare.
