Incontri

Although I haven’t visited as much as I should have, I’ve done pretty well food wise on my occasional visits to Dunfermline, enjoying visits to Grill 48 and the Stage Door Bistro in particular. I was keen to try somewhere new on a recent Friday night trip so was glad to follow a recommendation and check out popular local Italian Incontri on Bruce Street.

Calamari

I was joined on this venture by regular guest quester Iain who most recently joined at Forester’s Arms in his home town of Aberdour.

Incontri was certainly abuzz when we arrived. The large dining space has an impressive open kitchen. It feels modern, contemporary and quite stylish.

We were brought menus by the friendly and attentive waiter. The selection covered the expected bases but had some interesting looking twists.

Pork belly

I settled upon the porchetta to start then followed with a look at two of their pasta dishes – one with lamb ragout and one with spicy sausage – served as two half-sized portions. Iain started with the calamari then followed with their four seasons pizza.

Starters arrived promptly looking quite neat. Iain’s calamari was a little pale and the batter was underseasoned, but the tartare sauce balanced the dish well.

Pasta

Mine was essentially a good square of pork belly rather than a more conventional porchetta, but it was a well-executed and flavour-packed dish that I enjoyed.

Again the seasoning was rather timid with my main course, but both pasta dishes were pretty satisfying. The lamb was tender and the spicy sausage was good. The pizza was pretty decent, also.

So overall, Incontri did a good job of serving us good quality dishes from a menu that had some strong ideas. I’d be happy to return and was tempted by mention of a Sunday roast so will try to come back for that soon.
