I try to pop down for a wee wander around Stockbridge Market as many Sundays as possible and usually find something tasty to munch on.

Stall and sign

On a particularly chilly day, I stopped for coffee at Steampunk, then passed on warm wishes to Fresh Revolution and Scoff, before alighting upon a stall that was new to me.

Stortebacker – Adventures in Baking is a purveyor of sweet and savoury German baked treats. Aside from trading at various markets they operate from the Wee Shop in Corstorphine a couple of days each week.

My eye was caught by a box containing what looked like thin and crisp pizzas topped with various whatnots. I chatted to the friendly stallholder who outlined the various options and confirmed that the items were called flammkuchen.

I settled upon one topped with stilton, bacon and red onions (£2.50). It was pre-cooked so ready to eat so I commenced straight away.

It proved really good and much in the realm of a satisfying slice of morning-after pizza. As a Sunday market item it seemed like an excellent fit. I was very pleased with it.

So overall, Stortebacker looks to be doing excellent work and offers a range of German baked goods that are not otherwise widely available in Edinburgh. I’d be keen to visit them in their Corstorphine premises so will make a note to do so soon.
