Little Italy

Barnacles n Bones did very good work from the police box at the rear entrance to John Lewis for a wee while, but has since moved on to bigger and better things, such as being one of the guiding lights at The Pitt.

In its place has arisen a new trader called Little Italy. They specialise in…wait for it…Italian food. I paid them a visit soon after they opened.

Actually, I visited twice in the space of a couple of days. First time it was for very late lunch and I wasn’t that impressed. I had a pretty mediocre panino that the owner assured me was going to be super delicious. It was fine but little beyond.

Next time I visited for late breakfast and opted for their spicy burger (£3.50). This was cooked to order on a sandwich grill.

As I’m sure I’ve said before, I’m a wimp when it comes to spice. Consequently, when things are described as spicy and pack no kick for me, you can assume that they’re going to sorely disappoint a spice fiend. This was the case with the spicy burger.

It had herb and red pepper flakes which seasoned the meat quite nicely but it offered not even the merest spice tingle. I enjoyed it but it didn’t live up to its name.

So overall, Little Italy looks interesting but has some way to go to match its esteemed premises predecessor. Maybe their offering will develop in time, so I’ll give them another visit in a few months. For now expect good but not great.
