Comet & Blitzen
Bank conversions can take a number of iterations to clear the final vestiges of pinstripe suit and rolled up newspaper. The North West Circus Place home of consecutively Zanzero, Cafe Fish and Bistro Moderne has been a very tricky property in this regard.
Latest to try their luck is a Christmas pop-up called Comet & Blitzen. I popped in for a Saturday brunch visit.
The place has a deliberately informal and temporary feel to it with rustic benches and chicken wire style festive lights. This feels at odds with the fabric of the building but is a decent fit for the aim of the place.
The menu offers a cocktail-driven drinks list, sharing plate dishes in the evening with fondue to the fore, and the brunch and morning cocktail menu that I sampled.
I opened with a simple grapefruit gin fizz. This was shaken and served in a jam jar. It was fine although lacked pizzazz.
I opted for the veggie brunch dish, which brought together fried egg, avocado, spinach and cheddar on toasted sourdough.
The cheese was an error but the rest of the elements were delivered to a reasonable standard. It was good without setting pulses racing.
So overall, Comet & Blitzen is making good use of an otherwise empty restaurant space, but it doesn’t strike me that their offering represents a good platform from which to launch a more permanent business. I didn’t get the sense of a really dynamic set of ideas at play. Give it a trip this December, but set expectations to moderate.
