Bonnie Burrito

When Potatoland recently closed its doors after more than four decades of trading from its South Clerk Street shop, a bartley shadow descended upon the land.

Emerging from this gloom of despondency is the first permanent premises of a popular street food trader, Bonnie Burrito.

As is reasonably well-documented, I’m not a burrito lover but the Bonnie variety had been one I’d enjoyed more than most. Operating most frequently from a spot on Lauriston Place, where they continue to trade, I’d sampled their breakfast and Irn Bru pulled pork burritos in the past and been impressed.

Their shop has much the same layout as the previous place with a simple serving counter and room for just a few sit-in customers. The window shelf has been shifted 90° to form a high table in the only major alteration.

Service is much as you would expect with counter staff taking you through burrito assembly instructions then loading up the wrap with your preferences.

I opted for haggis with everything. Everything meant lime and coriander rice, soft beans, salad, sweetcorn, cheese, salsa, jalapenos, guacamole and sour cream. A range of sauce options were available from which I chose chipotle.

The item was rather overstuffed making the tight rolling of it a real challenge. This led to a bit of a loose wrap which is one of my burrito bugbears. This also led to my second burrito bugbear – a rather uneven distribution of filling items.

However, these gripes aside I did enjoy the burrito as each of the elements was of really pleasing quality with the rice in particular notably tasty. It didn’t come together particularly well, but that was more due to lack of “technical merit” rather than “artistic interpretation”.

So overall, I’d commend Bonnie Burrito to burrito fans as I reckon it’s a place that you will enjoy. The large one that I had today was a hearty lunchtime feed so likely to robustly address middle-of-the-day hunger pangs. Give it a whirl when next you’re in this neighbourhood.
