On another early morning trip to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary, I was in need of a breakfast feed. I’d spotted the arrival of Papercup, on the High Street, a few months back so stopped in to give it a go.



I’ve had their coffee in a couple of places in Glasgow and Edinburgh – I remember it being a highlight of my visit to Salt Cafe – and been generally impressed. I sampled a very good Brazilian espresso on today’s visit.

Their breakfast selection offered lots of tempting choices. I eventually settled upon poached eggs on toast with smoked salmon, spinach and wasabi peas.

This was cooked to order and arrived promptly. The smoked salmon looked a little peely-wally but the wasabi peas brought good brightness. The egg yolks were tangerine bright, too, but could have used just a little more ooze.

Good sourdough toast underpinned things making for satisfyingly fresh and filling mouthfuls, with good crunch from the crushed wasabi peas. I enjoyed it muchly.

So overall, Papercup is very smart and welcoming cafe. I enjoyed the quality of what I ate and drank so would recommend it to you. I’ll certainly be back next time I’m in the neighbourhood.
