Surgeon’s Hall Courtyard Bar & BBQ
I’ve visited the courtyard bar and BBQ at Surgeon’s Hall for the last couple of years but on both occasions it was after I’d finished all the required Festival reviews. Once more, I’d forgotten about it in my initial consideration but remembered slightly earlier this year so can finally give it its due mention.
With a programme of shows from The Space, the courtyard in from of the Surgeon’s Hall conference centre is quite a handy little Festival hideaway. It’s usually busy but not that busy. Last year my mother got to fawn upon David Hayman who was sitting at the neighbouring table.
On each of my visits I’ve had their halloumi and mushroom burger (£7.50) and been generally pleased with it. I saw no reason to shift my preferences this year.
Cooked to order on a smart gas BBQ rig, the item took a moment or two to arrive but that was entirely in order. I hadn’t realised it came with chips so that was an unexpected bonus.
The brioche bun was filled with three chunky bits of paprika-marinated halloumi and a large flat mushroom, accompanied by pickles and lettuce. It made for satisfying eating. The chips were pretty decently prepared, too, with a good level of crispness.
During the Festival some of the veggie options can be a bit weak, so some nicely treated halloumi could come as a welcome relief to those that follow that diet.
So overall, I’m glad to finally give this spot at Surgeon’s Hall a deserved mention. I very much like the oasis bar and BBQ as a getaway from the super-hectic hysteria of nearby venues. Stop in for a drink or a bite next time you feel the need for a Festival breather.
